Fishers Island Lemonade: Your New Go-To Canned Cocktail

Fisher's Island Lemonade

Where It All Started

Just off the coast of Connecticut lies the naturally beautiful Fishers Island, home of Fishers Island Lemonade and the historic Pequot Inn. The Pequot Inn is the only public restaurant and bar on the island since 1906. It is known for the unique atmosphere and groovy dance floor. As the years have passed, the bar and restaurant has become known for their delicious, signature drink, FIL (Fishers Island lemonade).

The Beginning

The beverage was first canned in 2014 by founder Bronya Shillo. Bronya, daughter of the previous owners of the Inn and experienced FIL mixologist behind the Pequot’s bar, recognized the popularity and high demand of the tasty drink. In canning the beverage, the popular drink became more consistent, readily available and easy to enjoy no matter where you “Find Your Island”.

With a strong mixture of premium vodka, barrel-aged whiskey, lemon and honey, Fishers Island Lemonade has been making its mark in a new category of craft cocktails in the “ready-to-drink” category. Fans describe the drink as fresh, fruity, and smooth. It is no surprise that the beverage is perfect for any occasion. Whether going for a sail, playing golf, or a backyard barbecue, FIL is the perfect mix of natural juices and flavors to satisfy your taste buds. Not to mention, the original FIL can comes in at 9% ABV without coming off as too strong. Additionally, the delectable four-pack commonly retails for $15.99.

The Design

In a recent interview I conducted with the wonderful Bronya Shillo, I learned a little bit behind the design. Next time you pick up a Fishers Island Lemonade, look into the impressive amount of detail put into a can of FIL. First, the product is in cans rather than glass so that it can be friendly to the boating crowd. Unlike bottled beverages, the design is also printed onto the can. This is so that the distinctive design doesn’t peel off when touched by the water. Between the colors, the stripes, and the coordinates, these all play a part in sharing some history of the island itself. The colors chosen are similar to the iconic colors on the Pequot Inn dance floor, the stripes signify the FI bath houses, and the coordinates are of course a pinpoint on the island.

A Philanthropic Business Model

After speaking with Bronya Shillo, I was able to learn that there is more to the brand than meets the eye. FIL follows a philanthropic business model. As Bronya grew up on Fishers Island, she is passionate about preserving the island and giving back to the community. Just to exemplify a small piece of her generosity, FIL is a member of One Percent for the Planet and gives back to a number of local FI non-profits every year. If that wasn’t enough, Bronya also was able to direct a number of proceeds to the Restaurant Strong Fund which benefits the many restaurants and bars affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fishers Island Lemonade recently launched 4 new products! Including, the Pink Flamingo, Spiked Tea, Fishers Island Fizz, and Fishers Spirit Pops. Once you crack a can of FIL you will notice the pleasant aroma of each product. Each new can embraces the same base as the original can; premium vodka, barrel-aged whiskey, lemon and honey. However, each can has its own twist on the original product. The Pink Flamingo has a splash of cranberry which signifies the New England cranberry bogs. The Spiked Tea has a splash of unsweetened tea, a natural favorite. Both  The FIL Fizz is light with a hint of bubbles, perfect for a casual refresher. Lastly, the FIL Spirit Pops are frozen with a just right flaky texture and are a great way to bring some fun to any get together. Lastly, the Pink Flamingo, Iced Tea and Spirit Pops all contain a 7% ABV and the FIL Fizz contains a 5% ABV.

There is a flavor for everyone throughout the Fishers Island Lemonade products. FIL can be found in CT, MA, ME, NH, NJ, MD, DE, NY, RI, and VT. FIL is also expanding to more states outside of the northeast including CO and GA.
