Tips for Preparing Your Car for a Road Trip

Tips for Preparing Your Car for a Road Trip

Planning a road trip doesn’t have to be a daunting task. It’s a time to get excited about taking a break from the daily grind! Whether you are traveling to the next state or across the country, you’ll want to make sure your car is in good shape. Read on to get tips for preparing your car for a road trip.

Check Fluid Levels

Before hitting the road, check your vehicle’s fluid levels. This includes the power steering, brake, transmission, and windshield wiper fluids. Also, check your oil and radiator coolant levels along with your AC. Once you’ve checked this, be sure to secure every belt and hose into place. Have extra spark plugs on standby and carry a plastic funnel in case you need to add more fluids. It is also a good idea to bring your car to an auto shop for a tune-up before planning a road trip.

Check Tires and Lights

Check your tire pressure and treads before starting your vehicle. Adequate tire pressure and treading are significant for proper traction while driving. Try not to inflate your tires more than the recommended amount to avoid popping them. Remember to bring a spare tire and car jack! Make sure all lights, including interior ones, are functioning properly. You should replace faulty headlights, turn signals, and brake lights before you leave to ensure visibility while on the road. Ensuring your safety is one of the most important tips for preparing your car for a road trip.

What To Bring

A GPS is a popular device to have in your car, and most phones already come equipped with a navigation app. There are several travel apps to keep you safe during your trip, including information on the nearest gas stations and roadside assistance. In the event of an emergency, bring along a car kit containing extra fuses, jumper cables, a flashlight, first aid materials, and a phone charger. Make sure to bring water and snacks as well! Staying hydrated and energized will help keep you awake, as will playing your favorite tunes. In addition to the basics, consider bringing the following to enhance your comfort:

  • Sunglasses
  • Trash bags
  • Towels
  • Blankets

Once you have taken these precautions, you’re ready to go. Stay safe and have fun!
