Best Ways to Stay Busy at Home

Best Ways to Stay Busy at Home

While many states have begun to reopen after seeing lower COVID-19 cases, others have restricted or paused their reopening plans after spikes in new cases emerged. This has caused new social distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders to be put into place to reduce the virus’ spread. Anyone in this situation should consider any of these best ways to stay busy at home to combat the boredom.

Read

Open a book, and lose yourself in the wide world of reading. With so many literary genres and subgenres to choose from, there’s something for everyone. Some books can teach you new skills, subjects, or languages, or you could buy a travel guide to take a trip somewhere exotic without having to leave your home. Those who like thrillers, mysteries, or horror novels can find plenty, and on the other hand, there are many comics or lighthearted pieces, too. Read a cookbook for new recipes or cuisine ideas for your next dinner. No matter what, you’ll find something that can keep your mind busy during this stressful time.

Cook

Of course, when you find a new recipe or food idea, you can give it a try. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner, novice, or experienced cook—anyone can prepare a meal. Beginners should start with easy dishes like eggs, salads, or cookies. From there, progress to harder or more complex dishes like entrees, appetizers, or more delicate desserts. Consider experimenting with bread baking or fermenting your own wine. You can also take up jam making and food preserves. Cooking can be a practical activity or an art form, depending on how you want to prepare food for yourself. The important part is not to give up if you fail. More kitchen practice builds confidence with more challenging dishes.

Exercise

Since many gyms, yoga studios, and exercise classes closed due to social distancing guidelines and a high risk of spreading the virus, many people have lost their motivation or drive to exercise. However, exercise is one of the best ways to stay busy at home. Many people are uncomfortable sweating, lifting, or running near others. They feel judged and, in some cases, intimidated. Well, you can keep up a daily or weekly workout routine from your home. Check out the many fitness tutorials online that focus on bodyweight movements since you may not have access to the machines or equipment available in a typical fitness center. While it might not be an ideal solution for hardcore athletes, it still allows you some relaxation and motivation to stay active.

Tackle a Home Project

DIYers might thrive during stay-at-home orders because they can finally tackle some neglected home projects. While you likely cannot do a complete remodel or other intense renovation that requires a team of professional contractors, roofers, or landscapers, there are many home improvement ideas you can still do. This includes cleaning out the garage, adding new shelving, and replacing countertops. Just make sure you do all the necessary research to ensure efficient results.
