How to Start Your Own Garden – Cold Weather Plants to Start With

After quarantining for several weeks, you may be looking for a new, fun project to help keep you positive and distracted throughout your days at home. As the weather is slowly beginning to get warmer, it is the perfect time to start a garden in your backyard. Whether this is your first garden, or you are looking for some new tips, it is always best to start your yearly spring garden with crops that are able to grow in cold weather. If you are a New Englander – you can relate to temperatures quickly and randomly dropping in early spring! Here are some crops that you should start off with this year:

  • Lettuce seeds. Lettuce is the perfect crop to begin growing in early spring, as they can grow in as low as 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, lettuce is always a great vegetable to have on hand, especially during the summer months when you’re craving a salad!
  • Potatoes. Who isn’t a potato lover?! Potatoes are able to grow in soil as cold as 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can get these growing as soon as possible. There are so many different ways to incorporate potatoes in your meals that you will never get sick of them.
  • Carrots. Carrots are also able to grow in soil as cold as 40 degrees Fahrenheit and are great to eat raw or cooked within a stir fry. Growing carrots in the early spring is actually the best time for them, along with the early fall!
