Getting everything together takes a lot of planning, but if you execute it properly, you should have little trouble making it happen. Here are a few things to consider during storm season while you prepare for the worst.
Evacuation Plan
The first thing that you should have on your list if you’re in storm season is a way out. No matter where you are, you need to know the roads and what would be the quickest way to any destination in all directions. So get familiar with your surroundings, and you should be alright.
You also need to know the ins and outs of your home in case you get stuck on your way to the exit. If you have a lot of clutter, you will need to organize your things so that you can have a clear path.
If there are main windows and doors, those should be your primary exits. Also, consider any secondary and alternate exits, if possible.
Keep Emergency Supplies
No matter what, you will always need an emergency kit of some kind. You can’t stock up on enough, but there are some basics of what you will need. Make sure that you have a first aid kit, batteries, lights, basic tools to fix things with, a knife, food, water, equipment for shelters, like tarps and tents, and something to communicate with, like a phone or a radio.
Inventory Personal Property
You will need to survey your property for any potential problems that could occur. For instance, if you have a transformer or some electrical cables near your house, you need to make sure you know where they are and if anything can potentially interfere with them.
Also, lightning can cause issues to your ethernet cables, so protect them with a cover if they are out in the open during storm season.
With all things considered, there are many obstacles to get over when preparing for inclement weather. Storm season can be devastating if you’re not ready, and sometimes even if you are. This is a brief list of things to consider during storm season, but there are plenty more to add to the list once you get going.
