Top Tips for Arranging Your Living Room Furniture

Top Tips for Arranging Your Living Room Furniture

It’s challenging to decide how to arrange your living room furnishings. When you have an empty room, you may find it hard to fill it in a way that’s both functional and attractive to the eye. Interior designers have identified several easy-to-apply principles that work throughout time. If you follow these simple guidelines, you’ll discover that arranging furniture isn’t so difficult after all. Here are our top tips for arranging your living room furniture!

Consider Traffic Flow

One of the most crucial factors to consider is traffic movement when arranging furniture in any area. When passing through the room, people shouldn’t trip over furniture or each other. Leave a couple of feet (plus or minus a few inches) between the coffee table and the sofa. Do the same between the chairs. Make a clean path so that people can easily stroll from one end of the room to the other.

Use Appropriately Sized Rugs

If you can handle it, place area rugs beneath all your furniture. It’s alright to expose some flooring around the room’s perimeter. But when utilizing an area rug, you must ensure it’s large enough to accommodate all the furniture in your desired seating arrangement. Large objects should at the very least have their front legs resting on the rug.

Get a Big Coffee Table

When it comes to coffee tables, bigger is almost always better. A huge coffee table in the center of a seating area is both attractive and practical. It serves as a focal point for the space and provides enough room for people to set their drinks and for you to exhibit your favorite accessories. A large table also makes it easier for those sitting around it to use it. However, you must ensure there’s sufficient space between the chairs and the coffee table for people to pass. Leaving about 18 inches is a good rule of thumb. If you can’t find a large enough coffee table, two smaller tables or a coffee table alternative may suffice.

While it can be hard to find the perfect setup for your living room furniture, we hope our top tips for arranging your living room furniture helped you get there! If you’re looking to update your living spaces style, be sure to consider interior design trends making a comeback. Examples include Art Deco style and maximalism.
