remodel your homeSo you’re getting ready to remodel your home. Where should you start? This may seem like a nonsensical question, but the truth is that remodeling projects, like many things in life, rarely go according to plan. Here’s three things you should do before you get out your swatches and tape measure.
Have “the talk” with your family
Remodeling a home takes time and often you don’t have use of certain rooms in your home while the remodel is going on. It’s important to sit down with your family and determine what everyone hopes to achieve through the remodel- what room is most important to everyone. Are you in agreement that you need a newer, more modern kitchen or do you think the money would be better spent expanding the living room? Remodeling is about making your home more functional and, if you plan to sell your home in the future, perhaps more valuable. It’s important to make sure that everyone is on the same page and gets what they need in order to make the most out of shared living spaces.
Consider how long you plan to live in your home
Do you plan to sell your home in the next five years, or are you staying put for the foreseeable future? The length of time you plan on staying in your home could help you decide which rooms to remodel first. For example, if you plan to sell your home, remodeling your kitchen and/or bathroom will get you the biggest bang for your buck. If, on the other hand, you’re planning to stay in your home and perhaps start a family, it may make sense to add an extra bedroom or invest in expanding your living area.

Determine what your areas of expertise are (if any)

Be honest about your experience level with regards to renovations and home improvement projects. If you’ve never re-tiled a bathroom, it probably isn’t the time to get started. Consider bringing in a professional, such as Kitchen Options or Best Tile to help you with the heavy lifting. They’re called professionals for a reason and their expertise can help you complete your renovations in a more timely and cost efficient manner.
Once you’ve answered these questions, it will be easier to understand the types of renovations that are ideal for your home and living situation. Happy remodeling!
